Take supplements correctly!

This is one of the most common questions I hear, especially from people who are genuinely trying to improve their health.

They’ve spent money on supplements, followed advice online, tried different protocols, and instead of feeling better they feel:

  • nauseous

  • bloated

  • anxious

  • overstimulated

  • exhausted

  • foggy

  • or simply “off”

And understandably, they start thinking: “Surely supplements are supposed to help?”

Sometimes they do. But only when the body has the capacity to process and utilise them properly in the first place.

More & More Supplements Does Not Automatically Mean Better Health

Modern wellness culture has created the idea that if one supplement is good, ten must be better.

People are layering:

  • powders

  • capsules

  • adaptogens

  • detox products

  • protein supplements

  • greens blends

  • nootropics

  • high-dose vitamins

Often without understanding what the body actually needs.

And sometimes the body responds by becoming overwhelmed rather than supported.

This is not because supplements are inherently “bad. ”It’s because physiology matters.

The Body Has to Process Everything You Take

Every supplement still has to be:

  • digested

  • absorbed

  • transported

  • metabolised

  • detoxified

  • and utilised

If digestion is weak, liver pathways are sluggish, bile flow is impaired, or minerals are depleted, adding more products can increase stress on the system instead of reducing it.

This is especially common in people who already have:

  • chronic fatigue

  • burnout

  • gut issues

  • hormonal problems

  • inflammation

  • nervous system dysregulation

  • or long-term stress

The body often needs support with the foundations before it can tolerate more advanced interventions.

Digestion Is Often the Missing Piece

This is one of the biggest areas people overlook.

Many people are taking supplements while also experiencing:

  • bloating

  • reflux

  • constipation

  • loose stools

  • food sensitivities

  • nausea

  • low appetite

  • fullness after eating

These are signs the digestive system may already be under strain.

If stomach acid is low or enzyme production is impaired, the body may struggle to properly break down:

  • proteins

  • fats

  • nutrients

  • and even supplements themselves

This means people can end up spending large amounts of money while absorbing very little effectively.

Low Stomach Acid Is More Common Than People Realise

People often assume symptoms like reflux or indigestion automatically mean “too much acid.”

In reality, low stomach acid is extremely common, especially in people under chronic stress.

Stomach acid is essential for:

  • breaking down protein

  • absorbing minerals

  • protecting against pathogens

  • triggering digestive enzymes

  • supporting nutrient absorption

Without enough stomach acid, the entire digestive process becomes less efficient.

And yet many people are never taught this.

The Liver and Detoxification Pathways Matter Too

The liver is responsible for processing not only toxins and hormones, but also many compounds found in supplements and medications.

If detoxification pathways are already overloaded, adding more substances can sometimes worsen:

  • headaches

  • skin issues

  • fatigue

  • nausea

  • irritability

  • brain fog

  • or feelings of being “wired”

This is one reason why aggressive detox protocols often backfire.

The body needs support and capacity, not force.

Blood Sugar Stability Changes Supplement Tolerance

Another huge factor is blood sugar regulation.

Many people:

  • skip meals

  • rely on caffeine

  • undereat protein and fats

  • snack on sugar

  • or eat erratically throughout the day

This keeps stress hormones elevated and the nervous system unstable.

When the body is already running on adrenaline and cortisol, adding stimulating supplements often pushes it further into imbalance.

Sometimes stabilising meals and eating consistently improves symptoms more than another supplement ever could.

Minerals Are One of the Most Overlooked Foundations

Minerals are involved in:

  • nervous system regulation

  • energy production

  • hydration

  • muscle function

  • detoxification

  • hormone balance

Yet many people are depleted without realising it.

Stress, poor digestion, medications, caffeine, processed food, and inflammation all increase mineral loss.

If the body is mineral-depleted, it often struggles to tolerate supplements properly because the system lacks the stability needed to utilise nutrients effectively.

Why “Detox” Can Make People Feel Worse

This is another area filled with confusion.

People often assume feeling terrible during a detox means it’s “working.”

Sometimes it simply means the body is overwhelmed.

Mobilising toxins faster than the body can process and eliminate them creates additional stress.

This is why proper detoxification support is not about extremes, starvation, or forcing the body aggressively.

It’s about:

  • supporting drainage pathways

  • improving digestion

  • ensuring bowel regularity

  • supporting hydration and minerals

  • stabilising blood sugar

  • and reducing inflammatory load

The body heals far better through support than punishment.

Foundations Come First

This is why I always come back to the basics before layering complex protocols.

Sometimes the most important thing is not adding another supplement, but improving:

  • stomach acid

  • digestion

  • bile flow

  • mineral status

  • protein utilisation

  • nervous system regulation

  • blood sugar stability

Because the body needs the ability to process nutrients properly before higher-level interventions make sense.

Functional Support Should Be Individual

This is another important point.

Not everybody needs:

  • the same supplements

  • the same doses

  • the same protocols

  • or the same approach

What helps one person can overwhelm another depending on:

  • digestion

  • genetics

  • stress levels

  • inflammatory load

  • toxic burden

  • nervous system state

  • and nutrient status

This is why personalised support matters.

Health is not built through copying strangers on the internet.

Final Thought

Supplements can absolutely be helpful when used correctly and they will never cause harm like mainstream medications from the GP can.

But they are not magic, and they cannot compensate for weak foundations underneath them and you could just be wasting money and getting poor results without the correct advice.

The body is not failing because it needs another trendy product.

Often it is struggling because it has been under-supported for too long.

And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stop forcing the body harder and start creating the conditions where it can actually process, absorb, regulate, and recover properly instead.
