The Hidden Narratives Around Nutrition and Medicine
Most of us grow up trusting that the health advice we hear in the media, at the doctor’s office, or in glossy adverts is designed to keep us well. We’re told what to eat, what to avoid, and which pill to take when things go wrong. But if you pause and look deeper, you’ll notice something unsettling: much of the advice we receive doesn’t actually lead to lasting health. In fact, it often leaves us dependent on treatments, confused about nutrition, and still struggling with symptoms.
This isn’t an accident. It’s the result of powerful financial and corporate systems that profit far more from managing illness than from preventing it.
The Illness Economy
The truth is, sickness sells. Pharmaceutical companies don’t make their billions by curing disease — they make it by keeping people on medications for life. And here’s the kicker: they’re funded by us.
In the UK, drug companies are funded by our taxes and then paid again by the NHS with our taxes, creating massive profits from us twice over. We pay to keep their system running, and in return we’re handed products that rarely restore health, but often create dependency and new side effects. That means we end up paying twice — once through our taxes, and again with our health. Their profit comes directly from us.
Narratives That Keep Us Dependent
Over the years, certain messages have been repeated so often that they’ve become “truth” in the public mind. For example:
“Fat is bad for you.” For decades, natural fats were demonised, while sugar and processed low-fat products took centre stage — fuelling obesity and diabetes.
“Cholesterol must be lowered at all costs.” Despite cholesterol being essential for hormones and brain health, statins are prescribed to millions who may not need them.
“Depression is just a chemical imbalance.” This simplistic idea has justified decades of antidepressant prescriptions, while root causes like inflammation, thyroid issues, and nutrient deficiencies go unaddressed.
These stories aren’t grounded in whole truths. They’re part of a narrative that keeps us relying on external “fixes,” rather than addressing underlying imbalances.
Why It’s Time to Question
Breaking free from these systems doesn’t mean rejecting all medicine or science. It means asking: Who benefits from this advice? Does it truly restore health, or just manage symptoms? Are there safer, more natural solutions being ignored?
When you start to ask these questions, you begin to see how the system is designed to keep you dependent. And once you see it, you can choose differently.
Reclaiming Your Health
The good news is, we are not powerless. Real health isn’t found in a packet or a pill — it’s built daily through the way we eat, move, sleep, and think. Some of the most effective steps are simple, affordable, and within your control:
Eat whole foods that support blood sugar balance, hormones, and brain health.
Support your gut with fibre, fermented foods, and mindful eating.
Move your body in ways that build strength and reduce inflammation.
Reduce toxic load by choosing clean water, natural skincare, and better quality food when possible.
Nourish your mind with practices like mindfulness, yoga, or journaling.
These aren’t quick fixes — they’re tools to reclaim independence from systems that thrive on keeping us unwell.
A Different Future
Imagine a culture where the focus is prevention, vitality, and resilience — not dependency and lifelong medication. That future starts with individuals stepping outside of the narratives and reclaiming responsibility for their own wellbeing.
