The Serotonin Myth - Client Success Story: From Years of Antidepressants & Anxiety to Real Healing

When Emma came to me, she was exhausted—not just physically, but emotionally. For over a decade, she had been struggling with crippling anxiety, panic attacks, brain fog, and mood swings. She was taking SSRIs, beta-blockers, and sleeping pills, yet she still struggled with overwhelming fatigue, digestive issues, and constant tension in her body. Every time she asked why she still felt this way, she was told she had a chemical imbalance and that she “just needed to stay on her medication.”

But deep down, she knew something was missing.


Digging Deeper: The Physical Root of Psychological Symptoms


To truly understand what was happening, we went beyond standard testing. Traditional thyroid panels often miss deeper imbalances, so we ordered in-depth functional tests to get a complete picture of what was going on. These tests revealed crucial insights into Emma’s thyroid function, adrenal health, and overall metabolic balance—things that had been overlooked for years.


Psychological symptoms are never just in the mind—they are deeply connected to the body. When I looked at Emma’s case holistically, it was clear that:


Her gut was inflamed & imbalanced – The gut and brain are deeply connected, yet no one had ever addressed her poor digestion, bloating, or chronic gut issues. She had low beneficial bacteria and a diet that was unknowingly triggering more inflammation. We also discovered that certain strains of gut bacteria, which play a crucial role in neurotransmitter production, were severely lacking. Imbalances in gut bacteria can directly impact mood by reducing serotonin and dopamine levels, contributing to anxiety, depression, and brain fog.

Nutrient deficiencies were driving her symptoms – Years of medication, stress, and poor absorption had left her severely low in essential vitamins and minerals—all of which are critical for mood, brain function, and nervous system health.


Her blood sugar was completely unstable – Constant energy crashes, sugar cravings, and dizziness were making her anxiety worse. No one had told her that blood sugar directly impacts mood stability and stress resilience the ups and downs in energy have an impact on the brain.


Her thyroid and adrenal issues had been completely overlooked – She showed clear signs of hypothyroidism and adrenal dysfunction, but standard thyroid tests failed to pick it up- she was told her results were in range. More digging is often needed regarding thyroid function. When we looked deeper, we discovered her thyroid function was suboptimal, impacting her metabolism, energy, and mental clarity and in turn her daily functioning. Meanwhile, chronic stress had left her adrenals burned out, leading to unstable cortisol levels that were fuelling her anxiety, mood swings, and fatigue.

Her body was in a constant state of fight-or-flight – Chronic stress and unresolved trauma had dysregulated her adrenal function and nervous system, keeping her stuck in a state of panic, overwhelm, and exhaustion feeling like a raw nerve.
