Why Understanding Your Hormones Could Be the Missing Piece in Your Health Journey

If there's one topic that keeps coming up in consultations and conversations in my shop, it's hormones.
Every week I meet women who are struggling with symptoms that are affecting their quality of life. They often tell me they don't feel like themselves anymore. They feel exhausted, overwhelmed, anxious, forgetful, and frustrated by changes they can't explain.
Many are experiencing:
Brain fog
Anxiety
Poor sleep
Weight gain
Low mood
Fatigue
Hot flushes
Loss of confidence
Low libido
Joint aches and pains
Memory problems
Mood swings
Low motivation
For many women, these symptoms begin during perimenopause or menopause. They are often told that declining hormones are to blame and may be offered hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a solution.
What concerns me is how many women still don't fully understand what is happening inside their bodies before making decisions about their health.
Hormones Are More Complex Than Most People Realise
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the belief that hormone symptoms are always caused by low oestrogen. The reality is that hormone health is rarely that straightforward.
Many symptoms commonly associated with low oestrogen can also occur when oestrogen is relatively high compared to progesterone. Some women may be producing adequate levels of hormones but may not be metabolising or eliminating them efficiently.
This means two women with very similar symptoms may require completely different approaches.
Symptoms such as:
Anxiety
Breast tenderness
Weight gain
Heavy periods
Brain fog
Mood changes
Poor sleep
can occur for multiple reasons.
Without understanding the underlying picture, it's difficult to know which approach is most appropriate.
The Hormones Are Only Part of the Story
One reason hormone symptoms can be so confusing is because hormones do not work in isolation. They are influenced by multiple systems throughout the body.
Stress and Cortisol
Chronic stress can have a profound effect on hormone balance. When the body perceives ongoing stress, resources may be diverted towards producing stress hormones rather than supporting reproductive hormones.
This can contribute to:
Fatigue
Poor sleep
Anxiety
Weight gain
Blood sugar imbalances
Mood changes
Blood Sugar Imbalances
Few women realise how much blood sugar affects hormones. Frequent spikes and crashes in blood glucose can influence cortisol, insulin, inflammation, appetite regulation, and sex hormone balance.
This is one reason why many women notice improvements in energy, mood, cravings, and hormonal symptoms when they focus on stabilising blood sugar.
Thyroid Function
The thyroid plays a critical role in metabolism, energy production, temperature regulation, and cognitive function. Symptoms of thyroid dysfunction can overlap significantly with symptoms commonly attributed to menopause, including:

Fatigue
Brain fog
Weight gain
Low mood
Hair thinning
Poor concentration
Inflammation
Chronic low-grade inflammation may influence hormone signalling and overall wellbeing.
Poor diet, digestive issues, chronic stress, poor sleep, infections, and environmental exposures can all contribute to inflammatory burden within the body.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Hormones depend upon nutrients. Deficiencies in nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, B vitamins, omega-3 fats, and iron can influence energy production, mood, cognitive function, and hormone metabolism.
Why I Use Functional Testing
One of the most common things I hear from women is:
"I just want to know what's actually going on."
And honestly, I completely understand.
When you're experiencing symptoms every day, guessing can become exhausting.
This is why I often use functional testing within my practice. Functional testing can help us move beyond assumptions and begin exploring what may be contributing to symptoms at a deeper level. Rather than relying solely on symptom patterns, we can gather additional information to help guide a personalised approach.
Why I Use the DUTCH Plus Test
One of the hormone assessments I use most frequently is the DUTCH Plus test.
What makes this test particularly interesting is that it doesn't simply measure hormone levels. It also provides information about how hormones are being metabolised and processed within the body.
The test evaluates markers relating to:
Oestrogen metabolism
Progesterone metabolites
Androgen metabolites
Cortisol patterns throughout the day
The body's stress response
This additional information can help create a more complete picture of what may be influencing symptoms. For example, two women may have similar hormone levels, yet differences in hormone metabolism could potentially contribute to very different experiences. The test can also provide insight into daily cortisol patterns, which can be useful when considering the impact of stress on overall wellbeing.
Knowledge Creates Empowerment

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing the shift that occurs when women finally begin to understand their bodies. For many, the greatest benefit isn't simply receiving test results. It's gaining clarity. When you understand your body better, the confusion often starts to lift. You begin to recognise patterns. You start to understand why certain symptoms may be occurring. And perhaps most importantly, you realise there may be reasons behind how you're feeling.
I regularly see women leave consultations feeling more informed, more confident, and more empowered than when they arrived. Not because we have all the answers immediately, but because we have a clearer roadmap to follow.
Every Woman's Hormone Story Is Unique
Hormonal health is deeply individual. What works for one woman may not work for another.
This is why I believe personalised support matters. Rather than assuming symptoms are simply something you must live with, it's worth taking the time to explore what your body may be trying to tell you. Your hormones are only one piece of the puzzle, but understanding them can often provide valuable insight into your overall health and wellbeing.
