Protecting Your Energy: Why Saying “No” is Sometimes the Best Yes

Over recent years, I’ve learned an invaluable lesson about self-care and boundaries: protecting your energy is not just important—it’s essential. One of the most empowering tools I’ve discovered? The ability to say “no.”

“No” to plans when my energy feels drained.“No” to tasks that can wait another day.“No” to overcommitting just to meet someone else’s expectations.

As we step into a new year, I want to share something I’ve come to deeply understand: rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s the foundation that supports everything else—our relationships, work, health, and ability to show up authentically for the people and responsibilities that truly matter.

It’s easy to get swept up in the constant hum of life: work deadlines, packed calendars, and the endless list of things to do. But prioritising your mental and emotional well-being isn’t selfish; it’s a sign of strength. Taking time to care for yourself doesn’t mean you’re disconnecting from others—it means you’re reconnecting with you.

At times, the most nurturing act of self-love is to cancel plans, turn off your phone, and simply recharge. It’s about giving yourself permission to rest without guilt or apology. When we honour our needs, we create space for a life that feels more balanced, sustainable, and aligned with who we truly are.

For a long time, I lived in a cycle of overcompensating, trying to prove my worth to myself and others. As a recovering addict, I carried a deep sense of guilt and overwhelm that made me feel like I had to do more, give more, and never slow down. Rest felt like a luxury I hadn’t earned, and saying “no” seemed impossible.

Breaking free from addiction wasn’t just about quitting substances—it was about learning to rebuild my life in a way that honoured my health and well-being. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned was that constantly pushing myself wasn’t the solution. In fact, it only led to burnout, resentment, and more struggles with my mental and physical health.

When I finally allowed myself to prioritise rest and protect my energy, everything began to change. It wasn’t easy at first; the guilt of slowing down was overwhelming. But as I practiced saying “no” and creating boundaries, I started to feel stronger, steadier, and more in control of my life.

This shift has not only transformed my own health but has become a cornerstone of how I support my clients. Many of them feel trapped in the same cycle of overcompensation, whether it’s due to addiction, trauma, or the pressure to always “do more.” When they start embracing rest, balance, and self-compassion, they notice powerful changes—improved mental clarity, reduced anxiety, and a sense of peace they didn’t think was possible.

Choosing to prioritise your well-being isn’t selfish; it’s a profound act of self-love. It’s a reminder that you are enough as you are, without having to prove anything to anyone. For me, this realisation has been life-changing, and it’s one I’m deeply passionate about sharing with others.

Listening to your body is key. If it’s telling you to slow down, let it. Trust that by protecting your energy, you’re building the resilience to face challenges, care for loved ones, and pursue your goals with clarity and intention.

So, as you set intentions for this year, ask yourself: how can you protect your energy? Maybe it’s setting clearer boundaries, creating more downtime, or saying “no” to things that don’t align with your values.

What’s one small step you can take to honour yourself this year? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if this resonates with you, don’t forget to share it with someone who might need the reminder.
